What is the praying mantis up to with those giant claws? How well does it see with those giants eyes? Do they really participate in animal cannibalism?
This single-session course contains a lecture about the praying mantis. The mantis is an insect, yet it also exhibits higher-level functioning that is almost human-like. We will explore how biology describes animals based on what they have in common. Learners will discuss the unique mantis traits, and how they may or may not be biologically beneficial. The discussion will consider how biology and biochemistry can sometimes cause animals to perform behaviors that seem unusual to an observer, yet somehow benefit the species as a whole.
