The number “101” is an expression for a beginner level course. Perhaps more typical at the university level, courses are numbered to indicate their difficulty. The numbering sometimes starts with 101, indicating that it’s the very first course in a larger sequence of courses. These days, though, it’s rare to actually see the number 101 used. Chem 101 is an expression for a beginner level, introductory class in chemistry.
