What Is Everyday Chemistry?
Chemistry happens every day, all around us, all the time. Every thing here on Earth is made of atoms, and in chemistry we study how these atoms make up the stuff around us. And how that stuff behaves.Â
Chemistry isn’t just about laboratory experiments. It’s a means to interpret the world around us. Some common examples of everyday chemistry include:
- Everyday chemicals such as water, oils, fuels, and air are all around us.
- Chemicals are generally solids, liquids, or gasses. We call these the states of matter.
- Cooking, like a chemistry experiment, requires mixing the right chemicals in the right ratios. We need to measure precisely, not just combine random amounts of chemical and hope for the best.
- Medicine is a great example of everyday chemistry. Take aspirin. For thousands of years, people chewed the bark of Willow Treats for pain relief. That chemical is processed into modern aspirin tablets.
- The weather is a great example of everyday chemistry. Interestingly, the ability of water to evaporate and form clouds is the main reason we experience weather. Lots of chemical reactions happen in the atmosphere too, like formation of the ozone layer way up above the surface of the planet.
- Batteries like a AA or AAA are actually an electrochemical reaction between two different metals. There are lots of batteries in our modern, digital world.
- Inks, dyes, and paints are chemicals. Today we have all colors of the rainbow easily available due to synthetic pigments. Previously, color was a difficult thing to produce.
- Cleaning products are chemicals that are often classified as bases or alkaline.
- Cosmetics and skin care products are classic bio-chemicals. They are related to soap, another common, everyday chemical.
