PS1.3 Multiplication Identity and Negation

Negation Worksheets

Click here to find PS1.3 in the Negatiation Worksheets. You will see this idea again in PS1.5 for division. The same idea applies. Negation happens when you multiply or divide by -1 (negative one).

Negation means a change of sign. Plus to minus. And also minus to plus.

Note the result won’t always be negative. Negating a negative number makes a positive number. Negation and negative are different things.

Identity Worksheets

Click here to find PS1.3 in the Identity Worksheets. You will see this idea again in PS1.5 for division. The same idea applies. Nothing happens when you multiply or divide by 1 (positive one). That’s why it’s called an identity.

Identity just means the same thing. So a positive number stays positive. A negative number stays negative. Nothing happens.

Note the the identity worksheets are the same as the negation worksheets! They are about the numbers -1 and 1. These are related topics, and you should know the difference between negation and identity. You need to get the sign correct in these situations, or it can cause problems later!
